Postcards From… The Mani
We all need some light entertainment on a Monday. So every Monday I’m going to be sending some postcards from the edge.
Or, in this case, the Mani, Greece, where we’ve spent most of the last month. We’ve admired the view…
Walked down a gorge…
Swum in the Aegean…
Gawped at autumn wildflowers…
Visited Mystras, the last outpost of Byzantium after Constantinople fell…
Spent FAR too much time in Kardamyli…
Got up close and personal with Byzantine architecture…
And mainlined fresh fruit and vegetables.
Thanks for all your kind wishes for Zac, both here and on Facebook. He’s recovering pretty well and I’m hoping he’ll be right as rain inside a week.
Blasphemy! 🙂
*coughs*
*blushes*
But I HAVE THE TAGLINE, goddamn it! So you’re a better photographer and had the idea first? So what?!
Its not original anyways “postcards from the edge” lots of people use it :-D.
And then ‘imitation is the best form of flattery”
Tch! Yeah, it’s unoriginal, but for the moment it works with what I”m about. I hope….
Lovely photos! Looks like a beautiful and serene setting. I’d love to be there right now, it’s so cold in Berlin.
Thanks, Cheryl. It’s still warm even in Athens, bizarrely — but it’s probably a bit late to make the trip now (because of the mountains, it gets surprisingly chilly there for southern europe)…
I really enjoyed these pictures. I’m glad Zach and you are doing well.
I’ve only been to Athens and only for less than 24 hours, so I need to go back to Greece and see much more of it.
I’d recommend it. Santorini and Crete are amazing, and I do love the Mani, and the Peloponnese as a whole. Athens has a lot going on for it as well…
Beautiful shots! We really need to make our way to Greece one of these days. Maybe next summer 🙂
I’d recommend the times just before and after the school holidays — so May-June or September. It’s warm enough to swim and enjoy yourself, but rooms are cheaper and there’s not so many crowds or traffic…
I love that one is called the Palace of the Despots. I could totally live there. 🙂
Bwahahaha! Yes, it actually was the palace of the despots. Which was a technical term for a late Byzantine ruler, believe it or not. They’re doing it up, I think, but I’m not sure what they’re turning it into as yet (predictably, there was a strike that day, so we didn’t get as much time to poke around as I”d have liked).
so glad zac is healing. and what a lovely place to BE!
Thank you! My lovely parents have a house there. A good choice…
Aegean sea is a very good place for swimming and fishing. We were there last summer for my travel review. I must say it’s the best so far I’ve ever been.
Yes, I like it for swimming. There’s not much to see under the water, but there is some nice windsurfing at Finikounda, in fact, and other places.
Lovely photos! We’re dying to hit the Aegean, but trying to restrain ourselves till it’s warm enough to really enjoy swimming. 🙂 Thanks for the great pics to tide us over.
Thank you, Micki. The Mani really is very special. It doesn’t have the obvious big-ticket stuff — though you would LOVE the Caves of Diros — but it’s where a lot of switched-on Greeks go for their hols. I do recommend it. A lot. Also — Kalamata olives? What can I say?!
So happy to hear that he’s on the mend. What a whirlwind medical tour. Can’t be fun, but it does seem somewhat exciting and in the spirit of your nomadic life.
Great photos. Never been to Greece, but it looks lovely.
Thank you! He’s much, much better…
Greece is gorgeous, and the Mani’s a very special part of it. I thoroughly recommend you visit. Turkey, honestly, is better for Hellenistic ruins, but Greece is very special indeed.
Awesome pics, and what a fun way to show them. And it looks like I don’t need to feel bad about copying the idea:)
Well, you know who I copied it from, right?!
