The Friday Photo: Heavenly Palace
Yesterday we wandered through the skyscrapers of downtown Kunming to gawp at this ninth-century pagoda, set in a quiet garden where grandmothers take their grandchildren after school.
In the evening, we watched the first module of China’s space station, the Tian-Gong 1 (Heavenly Palace), soar into the sky. The history and the future of an emerging hyperpower, all in one ordinary day.
I love the coloring in this photo and how it looks like it could have been taken two centuries ago. Dreamy!
Thanks. It was SUCH a contrast to the space launch. A really fascinating time to be in China…
That is a superb place! Where I live, we can’t have anything more than 2 stories 🙂
I can’t get over the fact it’s over a thousand years old… Taller than anything the Mayans were building, and WAY taller than anything in Europe at that time.
gorgeous!!
thanks!
What an incredible journey… and all in one day! Love the photograph of the old pagoda. If I wasn’t wearing this moon boot taking enforced rest while my bunion op heals I’d be over there in a shot. The space launch sounds amazing. What a fascinating place to be at this time. We are under water here in Chiang Mai. Managed to dodge the water in a friends Tuk Tuk which was great just to get out! I bet Z LOVED the launch…
He did, Susie, he was quite TOTALLY excited. In fact, we both were. The end of one era. The beginning of another…
