The Sunday Six: Great Restaurants in Ubud, Bali

This post is now out of date. Please head on over to my other site for 21 of Ubud’s best restaurants, current as of March 2017. You might also want to check this post: “Where Should I Stay in Ubud?

The Ubud dining scene has more diversity than you’d think. From vegan to Italian via street food, here are six of our favourite restaurants in Ubud, Bali.

1: Café Des Artistes

Some of the best steaks in Indonesia and, arguably, South-East Asia, plus a pretty inside-outside garden setting make Des Artistes a great place for a (relative) splurge. Oenophiles will appreciate the extensive wine list, while decent local fizz is available at very sensible prices. The salads, seafood and smoked salmon are fantastic, as are the breads, but the Café de Paris steaks with garlic butter are to die for.

2: Kafe

If you ever thought raw food was what Hollywood stars ate to mask their anorexia, Kafe’s raw food offer will make you think again. Because the dishes these guys can create, using temperatures no higher than 118 degrees, can be outstanding. A hit with the yoga crew, veggie and vegan options feature heavily, alongside some succulent smoothies, though carnivores will survive quite happily. Kafe’s raw, vegan ravioli with sunflower seed “cheese” will make you look at raw food in a new light.

3: Café Lotus

Bang next door to the Temple of Saraswati, this Balinese-style outdoor restaurant enables you to watch the nightly dances while you eat. The menu features a range of Balinese classics alongside Western favourites, and if you want to try the gorgeous ayam betutu (duck roasted with spices for 24 hours) without ordering in advance, this is one of few places in town to do so. Choose between low cushions and high seating: you’ll find dance schedules at the tourist office.

4: Pizza Bagus

Genuinely good Italian cooking and perfectly formed thin crust pizzas dominate the menu at this unfussy Western place. Spaghetti Puttanesca is excellent, while you can create your own pizza, choose from their extensive menu or create a sandwich to your taste from the attached deli. If you’re hankering after squid ink risotto, Saltimbocca Romana, real prosciutto or just a really good pizza, head here. And play some table footie afterwards.

5: The Warung With No Name

Want to eat good food for a dollar or less? Head to this little place, opposite Pizza Bagus on Jalan Pengosekan, and create your own nasi campur from the dishes in the glass case. Expect spicy eggs, your choice of green things, pork stewed with kaffir lime leaves, turmeric and ginger, Balinese chicken curry and perhaps some noodles. Outstanding value, whether to take away in a paper cone or to eat at the simple tables inside the store.

6: Tutmak Café

By the football field, next door to the library, this slick, stepped environment is a spectacular place for breakfast, though their changing lunch and dinner specials can also deliver. The menu’s a combination of Western and Indonesian, with succulent lattes, flawless Eggs Benedict, delicious fresh juices and the full range of European and Indo delights on offer all day long. Some of the best wifi in town plus low tables with cushions make this a great place to settle in for the day.

And For Afters?

Ubud has some amazing gelato spots. Our favourite? Gelato Secrets, where gelato and sorbet span the gamut from chilli and chocolate to green tea via blueberries, passionfruit and latte macchiato.

Good steak? Gelato!!? Wow, Bali’s restaurant’s have come a loooong way since the most exotic dish was pasta with eggplant. Sounds like it will be a nice break after rice, rice and more rice. I keep thinking we should skip Bali this trip not because I already know it so well but because I am afraid I might get sucked into another four year stay….

I think you’ll find Ubud immensely changed. But there is some seriously good food there. One of the reasons why we liked it so much after East Indonesia was the food. It enables one to almost discount the tourist buses. And, hell, it’s so easy to get sucked in there. We were supposed to be there for a month. Ended up at almost three…

  2. YUM!!! what a fantastic list – thank you!

  3. Roy says:

    Wow, impressive line up!

  4. Yeah, I agree with you on cafe des artistes. Seriously under-rated and not too expensive for the quality of food.

    • Theodora says:

We went there for my birthday. Had a total blowout for rather less than the cost of a pub lunch in the UK. Glad you appreciate it too.

  5. Café Lotus if one of my favorite, you can watch the nightly dances while you eat.

  6. Jack Jones says:

Pizza Bagus is one of my favorite. Since I love pizza from the day I was born though. Especially if it’s an Italian style. LOL! I’m craving for pizza right now.

    Hi Theodora!

I fully agree with you regarding warungs. I only ate at them when there as you get plenty of food for a buck, and it is good indeed! I found one last time which is quite popular, up a bunch of steps on a road near the market. Nasis were at 5000Rp!

    • Theodora says:

It’s how the locals eat, which is always a good thing. And I’m quite a fan of the fried tofu and sweetcorn from the corner stands as well.

I have lived in Ubud in for 7 years — your restaurant list is weak.

Cafe des Artistes is TERRIBLE. I have given it two chances and will never go back

Pizza Bagus is also TERRIBLE – unless you like pizza crust that resembles card board.

Nobody goes there since Mamma Mia opened. I don’t know why they ever did — I guess no better options

The best restaurants in Ubud in this order:

Locavore – one of the top 3 in Bali – tough to get a table to book well in advance

    Minami – superb japanese food

Mamma Mia – if you are on a budget and want decent Italian this is your place

Tutmak – best western breakfast in ubud – I would only go there for breakfast

Other than the above there are no other restaurants really worth mentioning as they are all fairly mediocre.

The only ‘don’t miss’ one would be Locavore..

Another option is to skip dinner in Ubud and just go south to seminyak – Sarong, Mamma San, Metis, La Luciola would round out my top 5 on the island.

      Hi Paul,

Thanks for your comment. I’ve been meaning to update this post for about three months, and you may just have inspired me to do so.

I’ve always had good steak at Cafe des Artistes: when we went in Jan, though, we only had snacks and they weren’t as good as they were last time we were there. Pizza Bagus has gone WAY downhill since last time we were there, and I’d agree Mamma Mia is lightyears better. I’d add Mozaic to Locavore in terms of don’t-misses — though you can do lunch without booking a table at Locavore, I’d agree it’s dinner that’s the thing. I’ll have to try Minami…

      Cheers,

      Theodora
